Anti-pigeon furniture

‘Anti-pigeon furniture’ is a sculptural series of street furniture redesigned to question the use and function of everyday objects. Composed of a table, two stools and a bench, this collection of furniture is dotted with metal spikes, traditionally used to keep pigeons away from public spaces. Here, the peaks take on a new dimension by transforming these furniture elements into unusable objects for the human, blurring the boundaries between functional furniture and artistic installation.

The peaks, often discreet and utilitarian in the public space, here become the focal point and the sign of the absurd. They prevent any conventional use of furniture, hinting at urban control devices and the tension between functionality and exclusion.

Other furniture will complete this series, pushing the reflection even further on the limits of the accessibility and how the public space is designed to exclude certain forms of life, human or animal.

This work explores the ambivalent relationship between the human, the animal and public space. The anti-pigeon spikes, objects of control ordinarily invisible to the human gaze, are here exacerbated to question our perception of the town planning and infrastructure that govern our daily lives. By diverting the use of this furniture, the work also questions our relationship to comfort and functionality in common areas. It also questions the strategies of exclusion hiding behind ostensibly innocuous devices.

‘anti-pigeon furniture’ seeks to arouse by the absurd a reflection on the way in which we conceive our environments and on the implicit power relations that these arrangements convey.
